Biographie

    • Mike Oldfield** est un compositeur, multi-instrumentiste et producteur britannique, mondialement connu pour son premier album **Tubular Bells** (1973), un chef-d'œuvre instrumental qui lança la carrière de Richard Branson et son label Virgin Records.

Né à Reading, il commence très jeune la guitare et se fait remarquer dans plusieurs formations folk et rock avant de composer seul un long morceau instrumental, enregistré dans des conditions précaires. Ce sera **Tubular Bells**, utilisé plus tard dans le film *L'Exorciste*, ce qui propulse Oldfield au rang de star internationale à 20 ans à peine.

Au fil des décennies, il explore des styles variés : musique symphonique, folk celtique, rock électronique, pop radio, ambient et même trance/new age dans les années 90.

Carrière

Durant les années 70, Oldfield enchaîne les albums complexes : **Hergest Ridge**, **Ommadawn**, puis le cinématique **Incantations**. Dans les années 80, il s’oriente vers une musique plus accessible, avec des chansons chantées (**Moonlight Shadow**, **To France**).

Dans les années 90, il revient à ses racines avec **Tubular Bells II** et **III**, puis il expérimente avec les synthétiseurs, l’informatique musicale (**The Songs of Distant Earth**, **Tres Lunas**). En 2017, il publie **Return to Ommadawn**, un retour aux compositions instrumentales progressives.

Mike Oldfield annonce en 2023 qu'il ne jouera plus en public, mais continue de composer chez lui à Ibiza.

Oldfield est un pionnier du **rock instrumental progressif**, mêlant guitare électrique, instruments ethniques, synthétiseurs et séquenceurs dans des compositions longues, souvent structurées en mouvements comme des symphonies.
