'''Soma''' est un projet musical australien de dark ambient et techno, formé en 1993 à Melbourne par les compositeurs **David Thrussell** (connu pour Snog et Black Lung) et **Pieter Bourke** (membre d’Eden et plus tard collaborateur de Dead Can Dance). Le duo est célèbre pour son atmosphère cinématographique sombre, mêlant structures mélodiques dansantes à des masses de sons concrets et expérimentaux, évoquant des films de science-fiction, d’horreur ou des thrillers psychologiques.

== Biographie ==
La collaboration commence en 1993 lorsque David Thrussell propose à Pieter Bourke de remixer des titres d’Eden. Le projet Soma naît rapidement et sort son premier EP éponyme en 1993. Leur premier album complet, '''''Hollow Earth''''' (1994), est très bien accueilli par la critique pour son approche originale de l’ambient techno. Le duo poursuit avec des albums comme '''''The Inner Cinema''''' (1996) et '''''My Ancient Vihmaana''''' (2001), explorant des univers sonores immersifs et sombres avant de mettre le projet en pause en 2001.

== Carrière musicale ==
Soma développe un style unique qui allie techno ambient, dark ambient et éléments expérimentaux. Leurs compositions intègrent des sons « trouvés », des percussions industrielles et des mélodies hypnotiques, créant une musique à la fois dansante et profondément atmosphérique. Bien que le projet soit inactif depuis 2001, il reste une référence dans la scène ambient et post-industrial australienne.

== Influence et style ==
Soma est reconnu comme un projet pionnier dans le croisement entre dark ambient et techno. Leur musique cinématographique et immersive a influencé la scène ambient expérimentale et post-industrial. Le duo utilise abondamment des field recordings et des sons industriels pour créer une esthétique « machine » et paranoïaque, proche de l’univers de films de science-fiction sombres.

== Vie personnelle ==
**David Thrussell** est le membre le plus prolifique, actif dans de nombreux projets parallèles (Snog, Black Lung, etc.). **Pieter Bourke** a poursuivi une carrière solo et des collaborations notables, notamment avec Lisa Gerrard de Dead Can Dance. Le projet Soma reste un one-shot créatif entre deux artistes aux univers très riches.
