'''Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark''' (appelé également '''OMD''') est un groupe britannique de musique new wave formé en 1978 à Meols, Merseyside, en Angleterre. Pionnier du synthpop et de la musique électronique populaire, influencé par Kraftwerk, OMD est connu pour ses tubes comme "Enola Gay", "Electricity", "Messages" et "If You Leave". Après une pause de 1996 à 2006, le groupe s'est reformé et reste actif, avec un dernier album en 2023.

== Histoire ==
Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark est fondé par Andy McCluskey et Paul Humphreys, amis d'enfance, après des expériences dans des groupes locaux comme Equinox et Hitlerz Underpantz. Inspirés par Kraftwerk et Gary Numan, ils jouent leurs premiers concerts en 1978, notamment en première partie de Joy Division. Le premier single "Electricity" sort en 1979 sur Factory Records, suivi de l'album éponyme en 1980, qui inclut "Messages".

L'année 1980 voit aussi "Organisation" avec le hit "Enola Gay". "Architecture & Morality" (1981) est un succès massif avec "Souvenir", "Joan of Arc" et "Maid of Orleans". Les albums suivants comme "Dazzle Ships" (1983) sont plus expérimentaux, tandis que "Junk Culture" (1984) et "Crush" (1985) marquent un virage pop, avec des succès aux États-Unis comme "So in Love". "If You Leave" (1986) pour la BO de *Pretty in Pink* propulse OMD outre-Atlantique.

En 1989, Humphreys, Cooper et Holmes quittent pour former The Listening Pool ; McCluskey continue avec "Sugar Tax" (1991) et "Universal" (1996), dernier album avant la pause. La reformation en 2006 mène à des tournées et albums comme "History of Modern" (2010), "English Electric" (2013), "The Punishment of Luxury" (2017) et "Bauhaus Staircase" (2023), probablement le dernier selon McCluskey.
